Pensioner left bruised after dog attack ordeal

A DOG walker was left in a crumpled heap after his Yorkshire terrier was viciously attacked while out on a walk in Guildford. Douglas Sutton, 80, was out on a field close to Kingfisher Drive in Merrow on Monday, November 9 with nine-year-old Sparky.

After he was let off his lead, the dog was confronted and attacked by what was described as a large “muscular” greyhound.

In his attempts to save Sparky from further injury, Mr Sutton tussled with the greyhound on the grass while trying to drag him away.

Police officers are now on the hunt for the greyhound’s owner.
Mr Sutton’s daughter, Janet Darnell, said she was appalled the other owner left her father writhing on the ground with a sore back and bruises.

“What really infuriated me was the fact this person just left my dad there without even asking how he was,” she said.

“He is 80 years old and he was pulled all over the floor by this dog, the owner just didn’t do anything. It completely shocked me that he didn’t even stop and ask my dad how he was.
“Their greyhound could have killed Sparky.”

Sparky was left with serious injuries and was rushed to a vet in Bedford that evening for emergency surgery costing around L4,000. They were unable to fit him in at his regular vets Cape Veterinary Clinic in Epsom Road.

He is now recovering at the home he shares with Mr Sutton and his wife Margaret, 78, in Merrow.

Police officers from Guildford’s Safer Neighbourhood Team visited them the next day.
“I think Sparky has had a very lucky escape, we were really quite worried when it happened,” Mrs Darnell added.
“That could have been a child with a little dog and then it could have been even worse.
“I just think if one of my dogs had done anything like that I would have definitely found out how the other person was doing.”

A Surrey Police spokesman confirmed their officers will be hoping to speak to the other owner while out on patrol in the area.
He is described as 5ft 10ins and in his 50s, with grey hair and wearing a light coloured duffel coat.
The dog is described as a white, muscular greyhound or lurcher type with black markings. Guildford Neighbourhood Sgt Steve Juliff, West Surrey Police’s wildlife officer, said failure to keep a pet under control could result in a fine or ban on dog ownership.

“It is every dog owner’s responsibility to make sure their animal is kept under control at all times when in a public place,” he said.
